The Black Suit!

Sony Makes it official.

does look like a black and white photo, but Sony has officially announced Spidey is wearing the black suit which leads to you-know-who.  Over at SHH!, who broke the story, fans are going wild  thinking they see things (goblins?) in the lense reflection.

Goblin Suit Description?
This Q&A with someone who claims to be a crewmember showed up at Aintitcool  and gives this description of GG2.0's costume. Spoilers and key battle scenes at the link.

He looks cool as an individual idea. But again, nothing remotely goblin like about him except the weapons, glider and some green on him. No hood, the belts hold two swords. One long one on his back, a smaller one on his right leg. Pumpkins bombs are in his glider. Goggles are black. He has a green mouthmask. Gloves are black. No idea why. Possible to make it more to his liking, a way to "improve".

Grandma Says its Hobgoblin ...  Hunh???

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer Grandmama Osborn, aka James Franco's real life grandmother, says she knows  who her grandson is playing and its The Hobgoblin.

"Until now, the "Spider-Man 3" evolution of Harry Osborn, James Franco's character in all three Spideys, has been closely guarded by Columbia Pictures. Even the actors are under a gag order.
But Franco's grandmother, Mitzie Verne of Shaker Heights, knows what's up with No. 3. She says Franco's Osborn will take on the identity of archvillain Hob Goblin. That might be a shock to comic-book loyalists, because in print, Harry became the second Green Goblin."

Harry: Friend or Foe? IESB

The latest news, most detailed, news so far about whether Harry Osborn will follow in his father's footsteps. An anonomous, but "reliable source" had this to say to IESB...

"Rob, all the assumptions that Harry Osborn is the third villain the Hobgoblin are all wrong. Spiderman finds himself out numbered in this one. When everything seems to be at its worst for our hero, he finds himself an unlikely ally, Harry Osborn. Peter Parker's best friend will come to his aide. ..."We will see Harry battling his inner demons to make the choice between his father's legacy and his best friend. I will fill you in more later but gotta go, crew call in 10 minutes, Sam doesn't like it when anyones late! Holla, Peace..."
So maybe he still does go goblin and helps Spidey in the end and is redeemed.

Gwen Stacy Lives! Sort of.. The Hollywood Reporter

"Bryce Dallas Howard ("The Village") will play Peter Parker's love interest Gwen Stacy in Columbia Pictures' Spider-Man 3. Sam Raimi is directing the movie, which started filming this month."

A whole lot of Goblin buzz surrounds James Franco's movie releases of Triste and Isolde and Annapolis...

Harry to the Dark Side? MTV

Franco offers more clues in latest interview...

"The second film suggests that I'm going to a dark place," the ruggedly handsome, grinning actor admitted. "I think people will be a little bit surprised about what happens..."

Harry to become more "Villainous"? IESB

James Franco spoke about the beginning of principal photography for Spider-Man 3  and when probed about goblin questions he simply shrugged and smiled. The video interview is here.

"He also mentioned that principal filming will begin next week. The big question that most fan boys want to know is if Harry will indeed get to wear his daddy's armor and become the dreaded Hob Goblin "

Update  iFMagazine

"You have to do wire work and all of that stuff, but the experience of getting into character is the same," says Franco. "Yes, it's a comic book, but the people in Spider-Man aren't acting like they're in a comic book. They're acting like they're in the real world..."

Dunst Lets Villain IDs slip... Its Venom and Sandman!

Update 'MJ' gives another tidbit to MTV News

"I think we have ... I'm going to say two and a half bad guys," the "Elizabethtown" star said. "Because I think one of them is resurrected. But yeah, two and a half bad guys, I think, about in this movie."

Well the "half" could either be Harry or it could be Eddie. More below...

"We have really great people though as the villains in this film, Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace -- Venom and Sandman," says Kirsten Dunst while promoting her film "Elizabethtown."

"Maybe I wasn't supposed to say that," she says. Full Story.

Apparently she reversed them. Its Church as Sandman and Grace as Venom. Still believe a goblin will be lurking.

Freezedriedmovies claims to have the villains confirmed...

"... Topher Grace of That 70s Show will play the immortal VENOM in Sam Raimi's third Spiderman adaptation. We told you guys a few months back that "someone" has snagged the rights to the character of Venom off of New Line Cinema and it was reported a few days ago that Grace had been "bulking up"- so we decided it was time to put the pressure on. So there you have it VENOM! Now as for the other two stars listed above we've been told that Thomas Haden Church will in fact play SANDMAN and that James Franco will play HOBGOBLIN and not the Green Goblin II (like in the comics). No more info can be given at this time, but I've confirmed this with various sources and apparently it's quite well known..."

Dunst drops a hint

A poster at Superherohype.com who claims to work for NBC says Kirsten Dunst told him that "Harry is the main villain".

"I work for my local NBC station, so I attended the VMA on Sunday. Thanks to the Access Hollywood people, who hooked me up, I had unlimited access at the American Airline Arena. I had a chance to meet Kirsten Dunst, who was there with Orland Bloom promoting their upcoming film Elizabethtown. I obviously asked her about Spider-Man 3. Why wouldn't I? Well, since I was part of the media she didn't want to tell me anything. I guess to satisfy me all she said was that "Harry is the main villain." It's pretty vague. Is Harry Green or Hob Goblin? I don't know. Are Thomas and Topher secondary villains? I suppose..."             Read more here.

New Look For Goblin? and Electro enters the Mix AICN

"... It's also quite possible we'll be seeing an appearance from Green Goblin 2, but I'd doubt he'd pop up in a big way if there's already 2 confirmed villains, even with these rumors of a changed up Gobby costume and "surf-board-like glider" are to be believed..."

Franco Sets Record Straight About Hobgoblin Darkhorizons.com
Question: What about Spider-Man 3, hobgoblin?

Franco: See, that's a- - I obviously can't talk about it but it's weird. Everyone asks me about the Hobgoblin because actually Harry Osborn never became the Hobgoblin. He became the second Green Goblin. But I think Marvel and Sam and everybody, they're not going to be obvious about it.
and "more" from Zap2it
What, for example, is happening to Franco's Harry Osbourn, the agita-driven son of Norman Osbourn (Willem Dafoe)? In the first movie his dad became the Green Goblin and was killed or vanquished by Spider-Man, setting off a grief-spiral that has had Harry teetering on the edge of evil himself. In the comic, Harry eventually dons the Green Goblin mask and there has been speculation that the film franchise was heading in the same direction. One intrepid reporter attempts to beg the question by asking Franco if he's looking forward to playing a bad guy in "Spider-Man 3..."

"Um," Franco pauses. "Nobody has a script yet, so..."

Spider-Man 3 Villain Leaked?
Chud.com is reporting a new twist on this rumor.

"According to Rich Johnston's Lying in the Gutters comic book rumor column, Topher Grace is also playing the Chameleon. See, throughout the film Grace's character will be making moves on Mary Jane, and getting closer and closer, until it's revealed that he's just another disguise the Chameleon wears."

Wow! The author goes on to say that we won't have an official announcement til Next Year's ComicCon.

Rumored to be playing 'The Sandman', Thomas Haden Church teased fans on The Tonite Show, but rumors persist that he is, in fact, set to play The Chameleon, master of disguise.

"... Church plays Dimitri Serdyokov, who goes by false name Dr Turner at Peter's College. The Chameleon will also have a brother in this film which will set up Kraven the Hunter in a future film...." Moviehole.net

The report also mentions that the second villain will be The Second Green Goblin but that "he won't appear until the end of the film". Much as we'd like to believe this part the whole thing  sounds a little too hokey to be true. Stay tuned.

Two Villains? Latino Review

An "anonymous" source says there will be two and knows who they are.

"...Yes the Sandman will be in Spider-Man 3 but he's not the only villain. And no it isn't Black Cat like some people were suggesting. It will be SANDMAN AND HOBGOBLIN"

Spider-Man 3 Villain is Cast!
But who will he play? Reuters reports Thomas Haden Church, who was recently nominated for a best actor in a supporting role in the film Sideways, has been cast as Spidey's nemesis for the 2007 film.  Rumors continue to swirl about Venom, but the smart money is on Sandman.
Raimi said "In addition to the on-going relationship between Peter Parker and M.J., these films are driven by the great actors who have brought our villains to life," said Raimi. "Thomas Haden Church will be a fantastic and challenging new nemesis and we all look forward to working with him." ...  From 1990 to 1995, Church played Lowell Mather in the TV series "Wings".   Lowell?
           Update 03/28/05: Sandman?
Harry at AICN is reporting that Thomas Haden Church will be playing the villainous thug Sandman.

"Hey folks, Harry here... Multiple spies at Sony have confirmed that Thomas Hayden Church will indeed be playing SANDMAN. There's a ton of Sandman conceptual art all over the Spidey-offices! ... "

Of course nothing's official 'til we hear from Sony.

Villains Leaked? Press and Sun Bulletin " ...He's under contract not to talk much about Spider-Man 3, but Phoenix did say that the crew is in the conceptual design process for the villains, who are Man-Wolf and Venom..."

Black Cat in Spidey 3? The NY Daily News reports actress Chloe Sevigny from The Brown Bunny (*snicker*) might have let the "cat" out of the bag... "I'd love to be in 'Spider-Man 3!'" Sevigny says. "There's a villain in it who's a blond, buxom girl, and I'm trying to get it!..."

Raimi speaks on the Villain - Now Playing Magazine
"We wanted to have a villain not only who would fulfill the character needs but somebody who could entertain the audience on a visceral level and provide great visuals, something we haven't seen before, and create a real challenge and great foe for Spider-Man and his unique spidery, spider-like powers"
Venom? - Film Force
Raimi addressed the media to promote his new film The Boogeymen and teased them with his usual vague descriptions of the villain. But some speculate he hinted Venom is it.

More of the same from Sam... From Costo Connection

Spider-Man" franchise director Sam Raimi talked to the Costco Connection, the magazine for the store, about Spider-Man 3 and a possible fourth film.

CC: We hear that you and your brother have been working on the story for Spider-Man 3. The sense you get toward the end of Spider-Man 2 is that Peter and Harry Osborn will face off in the third. Is that a fair assumption?
SR: (laughing) I can't tell you that!

CC: I knew you'd say that. Well, what can you tell us?
SR: I can't tell you anything. I've been sworn to secrecy..."

The rest is the familiar bla bla about Peter maturing and his progression as a human being...

Raimi mentions GG2 Again - USA Today

"Raimi will only name-drop some classic Spidey villains, including the Green Goblin ..."

and from the Spider-Man 2 DVD Commentary...

Raimi again tries to pass off the "maybe he will realize what his father was and forgive Spider-Man" shtick and Tobey Maguire calls him out. Sam says, "guess that didn't work too well did it?" ...

No Sam, we're not buying it.

Raimi says  "last one" The Latino Review

"It's possible that he's been hating Spider-Man all these years because he believed that he killed his father, an innocent, fine man whose love he finally started to appreciate, or the father began to appreciate his love rather," Raimi said. "And so he thought that Spider-Man killed this good man and was shocked to learn that his own best friend had betrayed him, never revealing that he was Spider-Man. So you think that would be the case, but when he comes upon the lair of his father and realizes that his father was actually this mass murderer, the whole truth is revealed to him and he may come to the conclusion, he may come to the realization that his father was an evil man and finally had to be destroyed. I'm not sure what's in Harry's mind. I'm trying to figure that out right now. It's like if you blamed someone for the death of your father all these years and someone who was supposedly this hero, vigilante, and then you realized that your father was a mass murderer, it might change things."

Avi Arad on 3 Empire Online

"It's all about choices. Big potential, opening a whole other pallet," ... "No, it's way too early to tell you." Spoilsport. Avi, though, did talk about the possibility of James Franco's Harry Osborn donning the jade jodhpurs of his dear, departed, demented dad, Norman Osborn and becoming? The Green Goblin, as 'hinted' at in the movie's finale, when Harry stumbles upon Daddy's Goblin lair.

"It's almost an obvious continuation of movie one," says Arad. Too obvious? "No, I think you want to know, if you like the character, how would Harry get on with life?"

and more from Sam...

"All those are possibilities and I am thinking about that," confirms Raimi. "But who knows if Harry Osborn will actually pick up that green sauce and realise? 'you know, I understand why Spider-Man killed my father, [because] he was a murderer. I can now let my anger float away'. Or does he think 'I now have the means to vanquish my foe. Lemme at him!'"

Sam finishes writing Treatment for Spidey 3  The BBC

"Harry will be a problem, but I'm not certain if Harry will become the Goblin or not. The thing I'm really not certain about is if he comes to feel, "Now I have the means to destroy Spider-Man - I was too weak before but now I have a way and I will become the man that my father always dreamed I could be." Or, does he feel: "Now I understand why Spider-Man had to destroy him, because he was a mass murderer and now my anger can drain away from me." It could be an answer to a question and it ends the pursuit, but I'm not certain which way to go."

Sounds like a smokescreen.

Franco talks Gobby, TV Guide Online

Spider-Man's" James Franco told TV Guide Online that comic books fans shouldn't expect his Harry Osborne character to assume the Green Goblin character like he did in the comics.
"
There's some confusion," Franco said. "There's a Hobgoblin in the comics who isn't Harry Osborne. The second Green Goblin is Harry Osborne. And there's been a setup since the first film for my character (to be evil). But we had the Green Goblin in the first film, and I really don't think it's smart to repeat that."
So whatever they have Franco doing in "Spider-Man 3," he says, "It's gonna be different. I don't think I'll fly."

James Franco on playing The Goblin : Movieweb

"Did you talk to Willem Dafoe about having to take over his role if The Green Goblin were to come back? I'll tell you this. I just worked with Nic Cage and we were talking about it and I said, "Well maybe I'm going to have to play the Green Goblin, what do you think?" And Nicolas gave me this great move if it came about. [James claps twice, spins around and shakes his butt.] So, maybe that's what I'll do if I ever do it"
